About Nomad Sailing

Nomad Sailing is owned and run by Jim Barden and his sister Lou. We have a practical base in Gosport and shorebased classrooms in London and the South-East.

'A Winch for All Seasons'

Lou demonstrates the correct use of a two-speed self-tailing winch.

Three turns in the direction the winch turns (usually clockwise), bring as much line as required - pulling with your thumbs pointing towards your body. If you need more power, run the line over the metal tailing arm/feeder and through the tailing slot.

Now the winch handle can be used - continuous rotation in either direction will give either high speed with high effort or low speed but with much less effort.

ALWAYS continuous rotation - don't ratchet !
