Coiling a Line
'Coil with the Sun'
It is convention to lay each coil in a clockwise direction over your open hand - in the same direction as the Sun's path across the sky (for residents of the Northern Hemisphere)
Lay an equal length of line away from the coil and then bring the laying hand to the hand holding the coil. To avoid twists, it may be required to 'roll' the line by rotating your laying wrist or thumb clockwise as you bring it to the coil. There are various methods of finishing the coil, but choose one and get your crew to stick to it - it reduces confusion and tangles when trying to free up the line in a hurry on a dark and stormy night.
